Replacing a Garbage Disposal

Tools to complete Project: Hammer, Channel Locks, Floor or pump jack, plumbers putty, Needle nose pliers,  Phillips and straight slot screwdriver.
Disconnect the hose on the side of the garbage disposal, disconnect the electrical that is connected on the bottom, disconnect the drain lines that are also connected to the disposal.
You are now ready to remove the disposal. At the very top of the disposal is a ring that holds and locks the disposal in place. Using the hammer, unlock the ring by tapping the curled over part of the ring until it is loose. The disposal should come easily out, careful the disposal does have some weight.
Remove the snap ring, Mounting ring, Backup ring, fiber ring and sink flange in that order.
Install the new Garbage disposal next. If your existing disposal had a rubber line then remove the plug on the side that the drain line goes into, this line comes from the dishwasher. If there is no drain line then leave the plug in. Remove using a screw driver and hammer, do not let the plastic plug fall into the disposal. May need the neddle nose pliers to Retrieve.
Install the Sink flange next; apply plumbers putty under the flange before installing. Put some plumbers putty in your hand and roll until it looks like a tootsie roll. Apply to the under side of the Flange, until all of the flange is covered. Next push down on the flange into the sink hole, some putty should come out the sides,. Check to make sure the Flange is centered and straight.
On the underside of the sink attach the Fiber Gasket after which install the backup ring, the one with no screws. Install the mounting ring, the one with the screws.
Install the snap ring next, insert until it snaps into the groove of the mounting ring.
The mounting ring needs to be tightened next, using a Phillips or regular screw driver tighten a little on each screw until the screws can no longer be tightened.
The disposal is next, this is where the floor or pump jack will save a lot of time.
Put the jack in the center of where the disposal is being installed, set the disposal on the jack and lift into place. Needs to go as high as possible to allow the locking ring attached to the disposal to lock the disposal in place. Make sure the disposal is centered and as high and tight as possible. With your hammer start tapping on the locking ring to tighten, if in the right position, the ring should lock in place fairly easily. Next install the disposal drain line, if it comes with one. This is the black rubber drain line in most cases that comes from the dishwasher.
Install the Discharge tube on the side of the new disposal, if the disposal does not come with one you will either have to buy one or use the old one from the existing disposal, not always a good idea.
Hook up the drain, use new washers is always a good idea.
Install the electrical, remove excess plumbers putty using your hands and you should be done.
